About the Paul. K Longmore Institute on Disability
The Paul K. Longmore Institute on Disability continues its founder’s legacy by working at the intersection of scholarship and advocacy to celebrate people with disabilities as innovative forces for social change. Paul K. Longmore, a historian of disability, activist and polio survivor, started the Institute on Disability in 1996. When he passed away in August 2010, Longmore left a legacy that the Institute seeks to honor and expand. SF State and generous donors created an endowment for the Institute, and in 2012, hired professor Catherine Kudlick as director and Emily Beitiks, Ph.D., to serve as the associate director.
The Institute is a research service organization which provides a supportive infrastructure for activities complementary to the social justice mission of the University and resides in the College of Liberal and Creative Arts. In addition to our director and associate director, the Institute has Longmore Student Fellows and a nine-person advisory council.

Documentary Songwriting is a unique step-by-step process of collaborative songwriting that builds a shared sense of humanity. This method breaks down the creative process, making it accessible for anyone, regardless of their musical background, to transform a personal story into a meaningful song.
This workshop will be presented by DocSong executive director Caroline Rex-Waller who is a teacher, facilitator, and writer with over twelve years of experience in non-profit administration and education and Khalid Taylor, a development consultant, singer, and documentary songwriter. Caroline and Khalid will demonstrate the documentary storytelling method and the Hawaii UCEDD Research trainees will be on hand to share about their experience through deep listening, empathy, and mutual care as they worked with self-advocate storytellers to co-create original songs.
Don’t forget to also join us on Wednesday, April 16th, from 7:00AM to 8:30AM in Room 313 to network over breakfast while we highlight a few special recognitions!
